Growing Together, Praying Together (Overwhelmed - Part 2)

Yesterday, I mentioned to one of my friends, Mitch, more than this dream becoming a reality, I am more thankful of the opportunity for me and Alvin to again grow together and work together both spiritually and mentally. After this, particularly last Saturday, I felt our relationship went up one notch higher.

When I wrote that we continued to pray for it, we were not pushing for us to buying a house. We were praying that if it is His will, let things fall into place. We were praying for guidance for every decision. And most importantly, we were praying for His grace to prepare our hearts, so we can humbly accept His will for us.

We grew together, mentally. Since the time we started sitting down only three or four weeks ago, we had a lot of intelligent and mature conversations. I am the type who feels bad whenever he "audits" me every now and then. I was surprisingly okay when he asked where our money went and why our savings only reached a certain amount. There were a lot of computations involved in those after-dinner conversations. Both were very patient and open to suggestions. We worked together in a way that he led and I did the supporting role by doing errands that were needed in this "project."

On the day the priority numbers were released (which was only last Saturday), we again, like in the past, came as a family (me, hubby and our two kids). Everyone was present and everyone patiently queued. Everyone had a say especially when our first two choices were gone already! Everyone prayed for it.  It was a family thing and I couldn't be happier!

Although we were 18th on the line and started queuing before 7am, (some people were more desperate than us!) we still didn't get the original lot we wanted. It could have been a better choice, a bigger lot, a bigger house, a better plan for the value of money (it's bigger but it ends up cheaper) we're paying. But God had a different plan for us. He directed us to another one, which was actually our 4th choice. Initially, we were sad that we didn't get what we wanted (the ones who got our first two choices spent the night in the queue!). But looking back, we were thinking we could have been spared from a possible stress because of the builder assigned on that lot and God probably pointed us to a different lot so we can be more comfortable with our future finances. The lot that we were able to nominate is 8 thousand cheaper than our first choice. (Now there is NO immediate need to sell our lot).

We took a gamble.

I was scared to let go of this opportunity because I felt that the prices of properties will just continue to rise with the rate things are going here and it would have been harder for us to buy our own home. (The first release was only two months ago and prices have gone up $12000 more!) One professional advice we got recently is, "if you have the money now, then go for it!"

I guess, the gamble paid off.

At this point and looking at the future it's still not 100% kink-free. There are still some areas that causes me and Alvin to worry. But I guess, God would want it to leave it like that so we can have an opportunity to have faith. So we can learn how to trust Him and let Him be in-charge!

The kids did and are doing a marvelous job of helping us. They helped us pray for it. They helped us by being patient when we visited display homes, talked to builders, and even when I queued last Saturday for 3 hours! They are helping us save money. They are excited as us, helping Mama and Papa choose possible themes for their future rooms.

The praying part is not over.

We will continue to pray as we continue to grow on with this part of our journey, as a family.

This is the second release which we tried our luck on :-)
The peach-coloured lots were part of their first release,
two months ago! Our future home will now be in front of the park.
Our future community will have our own shopping centre and will be just across
the newest Ikea and Costco, how convenient is that!

A glimpse of our future home.
We really wanted a 2 car garage so we can house both Maggie and Ben.
But after consulting our financial advisers and family,
we humbly embraced what God might have prepared for our family.

Keep an eye on this space as I will continue to share the developments of this part of our journey.

Overwhelmed - Part 1

Overwhelmed.

That is the best word to describe what I am feeling right now.

Emotions are running high.

Overwhelmed.

Another big dream is about to materialize and we can only thank and praise God for it!

We are one step closer to getting our dream home! Our own home!

The past week was the peak of our discernment process.

In my last blog entry, I told you that I, we, were willing to wait and see if everything will fall into place.

And it did.

Our plans of buying our first home has happened earlier than we have planned.

Proves that God's plans for us far better than what we have for ourselves!

After we met with the broker almost two weeks ago, we had the impression and got to a conclusion that it's not yet time for us. We were still thankful for that meeting as it paved the way for us to set our financial goals so we are better prepared when another opportunity comes. That was Tuesday, 21 January.

Long weekend. Even if we were sure that it will be impossible for us to buy, much more try, a home on the 8 Feb release, we kept on praying for it. Over the long weekend, we went to the Sales Office and hubby got the plans and prices of the home and land packages for the upcoming release.

Seeing the prices, our dreams came crashing down at us again as the prices has increased tremendously from their last release end of November 2013. The cheapest now is $544k and the most expensive ones were somewhere around $720++ thousand!

Another reason for us to give up, right?

We really didn't give up 100% because we kept on praying and discerning for it, still.

And in His goodness, He sent people our way to help us arrive at a decision, to gamble.

My friend Vera got the actual land value of the package and it gave us hope!

The funny thing is, the ideas to continue trying came in dreams and very early morning! As my friend puts it, a Eureka moment!

Alvin and I haven't really told one another to make computations and see if we can work out something, financially. But when he gets home from work, he starts talking about the topic and lo and behold, we have, on our own made some plans on how we can possibly try to work it out. And from there, we sit down and discuss Plans A, B and C. Including the implications for each. I've never had a more interesting discussion than the ones we had last week! Maths. Big Time!

Mid of last week, we have our eyes set on a particular lot which costs $560thou. We were ready to gamble but there was fear in our hearts. First, it will deplete our savings and I REALLY need to have plenty of casual work to have enough funds before the land settlement late this year. This is just in case the amount being loaned to us by the bank doesn't meet the amount we need. And another implication is we REALLY need to sell our lot in Manila.

But God in His goodness had a different plan for us.

New Sacrifices

Before I start my new entry let me just share two "messages" I got yesterday and today.

Yesterday morning, as soon as I woke up, the first thing in my mind:

"Seek ye first the kingdom of God and everything shall be added unto thee."

This morning when I read the reflection of today's reading, the message that struck me was:

"Our God is a God of surprises!"

I guess these two messages set the "stage" of how I am dealing everything what's on my plate now.

I remember mentioning in my previous blog entry that one of our major goals this year is to buy our first home, LATE this year.

I don't know what happened but one thing led to another and we suddenly found ourselves being led to buying our own home, NOW.

It's a big decision alright!

Hubby and I were just reading articles that will keep us informed and knowledgeable of the processes but in two weeks' time so much has happened!

We really haven't bought the house but we are finding ourselves doing baby steps.

We've studied our finances, asked advice, watched and looked at the market for the last two weeks (in two weeks there was so much movement in the market), visited possible sites, compared buying old and new houses,  talked with builders, studied the buying process, registered to new home and land releases and prayed like we've never prayed before! We're not praying that He grants our wishes but we're praying for guidance as this is really a very big investment. To make the long story short, we're new to this and we don't want to make any mistakes so we're carefully doing one step at a time.

Nakakakaba talaga.

With this new investment comes a whole new set of sacrifices.

If you have been following my blog, you know that there is a deep desire for me to travel locally and globally because I felt I have deprived myself of that when I was younger. I really wanted to go to the US April of this year because I know that once we take the big plunge of buying our own home, travelling will be the first one to be sacrificed. And yes, my worst dreams came true!

Hubby and I had an initial study of our finances and it will be very difficult for us to squeeze in traveling for the family (to give you an idea how much new homes now cost in our area, it ranges from $500,000 and above). Unless I work full time and get the full annual pay of teachers on my level, then talagang maluwag kami, maraming sobra. But I still decided to work as a casual mainly because of the kids. At the end of the day, it will be a choice between spending time with my kids and taking care of my family well over the extra money and owning our own home with much ease.

Knowing me, I should be all grumpy and already super sad because of the would-be scenario. All traveling plans for the year and the next few years, scrapped. But I'm unusually okay. I'm not crying, I'm not grumpy, I'm not mad. I guess I was ready for it. I have long faced the music and so when we found ourselves already in that situation, I was ready emotionally.

I am thankful I'm taking all these things positively. I am also inspired by my kids as they are also cooperative and making their own little sacrifices in helping achieve our goal of saving up for our own home. When we go out and they see something they like, we just tell them NO and remind them of our future plan, and they are okay with it. No more crying and whining, especially for Sam. Everyone is focused on the big project!

I am actually not giving up. In my heart I know that all will fall into place. That there will be a time for all those traveling plans to happen. It might be a difficult start for us, but I'm keeping the faith that it will be easier in a few year's time -- the time when the kids are much bigger and I can go back to work full-time.

The search is on and our hearts are in place ;-)

Family Traditions

I am inspired to write more family-themed blog entries because a few days ago I got a text message from a friend and told me how she enjoys reading my entries, "so much thought and depth put into each post/blog."

I was actually surprised because I didn't know she was taking the time to read my blog entries! She is one very busy mum! It was a humbling experience. Admittedly, there was a time in my blogging life when I felt I lost focus. Instead of focusing on what really pushed me to have a blog in the first place, my entries focused on some of the not-so-important ones :-) The shallow ones. I'm happy I survived that stage and I'm back on track.

Now to my real entry -- family traditions. Over Christmas break, I chanced upon an article that tells parents that the best time to start introducing family traditions are when the children are still young. It posed a question at the end of the article asking the reader what family traditions do you want to impart to your kids? It made me think and reflect.

Ano nga ba ang mga tradisyon na gusto kong kalakihan ng mga anak ko?

The following are a result of my quite moments:

Christmas

- Christmas eve mass is non-negotiable
- Christmas eve and Christmas day family should  be complete
- Christmas eve dinner, family should be complete
- Mass for the Feast of the Holy Family, the family should be complete

New Year
- bless the home, every nook and corner with Holy Water at the stroke of midnight (this was passed on by my own Mum)
- always start the year right by attending the Jan 1 mass as a family
- reading of "Thank you Jar" notes for the previous year as we have our Thanksgiving prayer during New Year's Eve

Birthdays
- family should be complete in the celebration
- celebrant should always have Mass in thanksgiving for another year
- birthday cake
- birthday photo and hand print for every year

Easter/Holy Week
- annual family trip
- Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday are non-negotiable. Family has to be complete to attend church services regardless where we are

I don't know how to group these, but:
- always bless from the elderly and priests
- use "po" and "opo" when addressing the elderly kababayans here
- praying the rosary as a family everyday (I'm proud and happy that Liam is now okay with praying the rosary and Sam now knows Our Father)
- morning prayers as a family
- going to church on Sundays is non-negotiable
- teaching of "Angel of God" to kids as their first prayer
- grace before meals
- praying over before major trips, major events (like job interviews, exams) or when someone is sick
- there should only be ONE TV at home! no TV inside bedrooms

I realized most of the things I listed above are practices of the faith. I agree with our parish priest when he said that the parents are instrumental in letting the future generation understand and do the practices of the faith so I guess you can't really blame me :-)

I might have missed some so I'll be updating this list from time to time.

Aside from the religious family traditions, we want to have:
- regular mum-son, dad-daughter, mum-daughter, dad-son bonding and dates
- family portraits every year
- one major family outreach to the less fortunate

I'm also compiling a group of projects, which I hope I get to do while the kids are growing up. I'm not expecting them to do the same, but if they continue with the practice, then I guess these projects will now be a part of family tradition :-)
Here are some of the projects I want to do:
- school portfolio of their best works in school with their school photo
- balloon birthday photo (kids holding balloons, the number of balloons depend on their age)
- hand print key chain every birthday
- letters every year they will open when they grow up

I actually have a long list of projects, I'll be making a separate blog as soon as I start doing them. But for now, I'll be doing baby steps.

To date, we have started doing most of the religious family traditions. Hopefully when both kids are much older we can fully explain to them why we are doing such practices. For now, we are happy that they are being exposed to such practices.

As for my personal projects, I have started doing the letters and I'm happy that I have been consistent with it for the last two years! :-)

I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that we will be able to establish all of these family traditions.

What about you, what family traditions do you want to impart to your kids?

A Blessed 2013

Note: I posted this entry on a different title but I realised I forgot to add some so this is the edited version :-)

The year is still not over but I can't help but reflect on how it has been a GREAT year for us!

This year, thankfully, has been a better year (note that last year was a good one too!), and at this point, I really can't complain anymore!

I had to go and check my January 2013 blog to see if all the projects and goals I have set for the year has been met. I can only whisper a prayer of thanks seeing that all of them, and more has been achieved.

Career
This year was a year of good breaks for both me and Alvin. Getting teaching blocks was the farthest thing from my mind, but God has proven that He has great plans for me! Through these teaching blocks, I was able to meet the 180 day requirement needed for my accreditation at NSW IT (and I'm almost done with it! I'm claiming that I'll get to finish it before the year ends!), I was able to establish myself with two of the schools I usually work for and is now part of their "trusted casuals" and more importantly, we were able to bring my in-laws here in Sydney. Not to mention that I was able to contribute to our savings for our first home.

As for Alvin, he was given the right opportunity at the right time. He is still with BAT but was given a permanent post, in a different department. We are more secure knowing that even if (touchwood) the Manufacturing industry based here in Sydney is phased out, Alvin will still find work.

Family
Last year, I wrote that our marriage was better than ever so I really don't know how to describe it now. It's better-er? hehehe Alvin and I have grown individually and as a couple. It wasn't easy but I think we should both give ourselves a little pat on the back for a job well done. Our communication has greatly improved. We have learned to choose our battles. We became more appreciative of each other, more vocal in giving compliments to one another and in settling our differences. We became more in love with one another. We achieved this by praying for one another, supporting one another and more importantly, by His grace.

It was a good year for me for I have finally come to terms with my differences with my in-laws. A new phase in my life. Although the road to acceptance, forgiveness and healing were not that easy, it was all worth it in the end.

The kids are doing well too. Kuya started attending the big school and boy did he excel! Sam has grown as well over the year and we can only shake our heads in disbelief that she's already 3 this week! We are thankful that both our kids didn't encounter any problems in reaching their developmental milestones. There was no delay in all areas that could have made me and their Papa worry. More than the milestones, we are happier that they are growing up close with one another, happy and responsible. We are also happy that young as they are, they are slowly picking up the practices of our faith.

Health
Generally, it wasn't a good year for me when it came to my well being. I got sick and the kids got sick too. Nothing major, but it still was a hassle. It was a blessing in disguise as it was an eye opener for us to better take care of ourselves and to invest in our health! Earlier this month, we started to do some healthier practices at home. Hopefully, we will stick with it and it will pay off in the future.

Service
As for our service, there was a time I thought we were not doing enough, but through our weekly HHPMs and their sharing I was again proven wrong. God indeed works in ways we cannot see. I humbly reminded that He is in charge and that we are merely His servants. But we are are not getting complacent. We still want to do more, go farther especially when it comes to service. In His time, I know both me and hubby will be readier and bolder :-) This will probably something we can work on in 2014.

Finances
God has again proven how generous He can be! This year, I felt it's like Christmas everyday! Napagod at nagsawa na ako magshopping! Joke! Because of hubby's new position and my teaching blocks, it was a good year for us financially. We were able to upgrade one of our cars into a bigger car, we were able to have funds for the trip of my in-laws and was able to sustain all the expenses while they were here, that is in addition to our usual expenses and savings. We got more materially. We got a lot of extras. But more than that I am happier to share that through these financial blessings we were able to help more. We realised the value of sharing what you have in a way teaching the value as well to the kids. The thing there is, the more we helped and shared, the more financial blessings that came in. Parang hindi rin kami tumulong, di ba? I guess that is God's way of telling us that we should continue helping. We are mere instruments. We can only be thankful.

Travel
One of the plans that I wrote was the family will hopefully have one major travel locally or internationally for 2013. We didn't fly to another country because the budget was put to a better use, we had to finance the holiday of my in-laws here.  We also didn't fly locally, but we went on a lot of long drives, not to mention our first experience of real snow! Yes, I forgot all about our Snowy adevnture this year!!! Going to the snowy is usually part of the to-do list of Sydney siders :-) In addition, when my in-laws were here, we were out almost every weekend, doing long-drives --Canberra, Central Coast, South Coast. Sa isang lakwatsera na tulad ko, matagal bago ako maumay sa kalalabas, but this year I reached that state. I looked forward to just staying home during weekends! Napagod din ang lola mo. That might not equate to my definition of travel (flying) but if I'm not to be too strict about it, we did travel, a lot! We were able to explore more places around Sydney so I guess, we were able to reach this goal. Hoping 2014 will be a different story hehe plans for our first quarter trip is shaping up weeeee!

On a serious note, the tragedies that have happened this year all over the world, more so in the Philippines made me look closer on the blessings that He has given us. It pushed me to look into things that I should be thankful for everyday, to look for everyday miracles. To look beyond material things.

I cannot complain anymore because indeed it was a great year. We had what we needed and what we wanted.

Thank you Lord for 2013.

I can only pray that it will also end great to everyone.

It is in Giving that We Receive

Money has never been an issue with me and hubby except if it involves sending money overseas especially to his parents. I have always embraced this mantra: our family first, our kids first before giving something to family in Manila.

Hubby being the eldest in their family and working abroad that is, feels that he has a responsibility to give assistance to their family back in Manila. All his siblings are all professionals but truth to be told, if we are compare their salary with his salary, of course he is in a better position to help his parents back home. Both my in-laws are long retired from their professions and to their credit, NEVER have they asked any money from us since we have migrated here.

Bringing my in-laws back here would mean that we had to spend for everything, from visa-application to fare to travel insurance. That was fine with me because we can get to save from childcare fees for Sammie when they are here. To make it easy on me I was just thinking that instead of using the money to pay childcare, we just used it for the fare of one of them.

When they got here of course it would mean additional budget for food and an increase in the utility bills -- gas, electricity and water. Not to mention the money we have to spend everytime we go out, we eat or visit places. That was fine with me especially with all the help we have been getting from them. I was not planning in giving them any allowances while they were with us but I guess God really works in ways we don't understand.

Aside from shopping for them and I just found myself telling Alvin that I'd be giving an allowance to Dad and Mum after their first week of stay with us. Yes, I volunteered! Milagro! I sensed Alvin was surprised too! hehehe Anyway, to make the long story short, we gave them allowance every week and I was giving it to them without a heavy heart. I felt good about the whole thing.

When my sister-in-law arrived, again, it was another opportunity to spend. I think I mentioned in my previous blog that with all the travels we have been making I am starting to get worried. I was worried because it was all spending, lahat palabas, konti lang ang papasok. I even told hubby that I wasn't doing any accounting with all our expenses! I was getting worried because my guaranteed teaching days (teaching blocks) were ending. Tapping on our savings was non-negotiable of course.  But in my heart I know that God would provide.

During the last week of my parents-in-law I again felt the Spirit moving me and I again volunteered to prepare a little amount of money for Lolo Dad and Lola Mum. If it was the old Jeana, I'd probably wouldn't even have thought about it since we have already spent a lot for them. But I went with it. Along with our Thank You cards, we gave them that as a send-off present. Not only that, I felt like Santa I even thought of sending money too for his other siblings in Manila! Call it an early Christmas present! I don't know what was wrong with me! hehehehe Bahala na sila Lord. I gave it in good spirit and not with a heavy heart.

I was still worried though. I am only but human. But true enough, God proves that so long as you share, He will take care of the rest! As soon as we gave something be it in church, our chosen NGOs and most especially to our family, something comes back, instantly! Amazing indeed!

Tunay nga, kapag sarado ang kamay mo wala ka ng pwedeng matanggap kesa kung nakabukas ang mga palad mo, mas maraming biyaya ang matatanggap mo!

This whole thing of giving has been a loooong struggle for me. Slowly but surely I can feel that God is working in me, changing my heart, changing my views, changing my ways.  And just when I thought I have fully learned this lesson and fully embraced this mantra, God taps me and tells me I'm not yet 100% okay, that He is not done with me yet. Yes, it's my parents' turn this time. It's their turn to be God's instruments of teaching me to embrace the fact that indeed it is in giving that we receive.

My Second Parents

How's your relationship with your in-laws? Hmmm, sensitive topic? I can't blame you. Time and again we have seen how society tried to show in different ways the love-hate relationship between in-laws. John and Marsha is one classic example, right?

I was not spared from this too! Growing up, I saw how conflicts can arise between my Grandma and my Papa. When hubby and I got married, as soon as we got back from our honeymoon, we immediately stayed in a rented condo unit. So even if we have been bf-gf for five years before we tied the knot, there was no opportunity for me and my parents-in-law to really bond and get to know each other. (Five years is quite long you say not to know each other, right? Yes, but it is still different is you stay UNDER ONE ROOF everyday!).

The first time we really had to live under one roof was three years ago. Alvin and I asked them if they can come over to help us out at home as I was about to give birth to Sam. It was also an opportunity for them to have an out-of-the country trip and visit Australia the first time. My being OC and my being pregnant was a bad combination! To make things worse, we were all first timers! First timers to be together under one roof for six looooooong months!!!! I can only laugh and feel embarrased as I look back. Yes, it wasn't a bed of roses. I was always annoyed and I always had something to say! I got irritated with them so easily with the smallest error or boo boo they make. I got angry when they don't do it my way. Yes, I was a big pain in the neck! Surprisingly, we didn't have any confrontations or big fights. That, I give credit to them. Before they left Sydney, I apologised for being a B**** at times. Honestly, I wasn't proud of myself. Inside, I wanted our relationship to work and not end up like that of my grandma and my Papa.

Fast forward to 2013. Learning from our previous encounter, we were both ready to be more patient, understanding and loving toward one another. I was also thankful that I had a full-time job because I felt it was an opportunity for me not to focus on the small things they might do that might irritate me. Months before they arrived, I was praying for myself! Yes, I did! Looking back I guess it worked, big time!

My friend Vera, knowing the history of my in-laws' first visit did ask how I was doing after a few days since arriving in Sydney. I told her I actually didn't know and I think I have mellowed. I was still not sure then since I was out most of the time due to work. After almost three months, I can safely say, I have indeed mellowed. This time around, I saw and got to appreciate my in-laws, big time! Working full time for two months was no big joke! I had to leave early for school and get home a bit late. It would have been a disaster if they were not around while I worked everyday. I had two extra pairs of hands to help me out in my duties at home including taking care of the kids.I am thankful that they were there to listen to my stories about work especially during the times I had to address two major concerns at work. They were my listening ears and my shock absorbers!

This time around, we bonded. We shared stories. It melted my heart to hear their stories when they were just starting their family. We exchanged our views about different things and we shopped together. This time around, I made sure to focus on the positives than the negatives. Oh, I still get irritated when our personalities and practices clash, but I have decided to choose my battles. In the end I think, it did pay off :-)

I will not take all the credit...not even half of it. I guess I've been blessed to have very good and down-to-earth in-laws. I now know where hubby got his innate goodness (kabaitan). They are not the type who are "matampuhin" or "madrama" kapag nasungitan mo na. You can be vocal about what you like and what you don't like without them having a grudge on you. Hindi nagtatanim ng sama ng loob. As for my mother-in-law? She knows that there should only be one Queen in each home and she knows that it's me! She is not a demanding mother. She does not try to grab the spotlight or her son away from me or the kids. She knows her place and she proved it through her actions. I know, I should be thankful.

This morning when we were praying over them before their flight back to Manila, I can't help but cry. Alvin was even blaming me why he started crying too! Becoming a parent makes you realise a lot of things. Seeing their child pray over them and seeing them enjoy the things their son was able to give them melted my heart. Seeing your offspring successful and contented with his life is I guess the best reward any parent can have. I just can't help but think about my own kids...when they have their own families and kids. I want to be like my parents and my in-laws. I want to enjoy my retirement, I want to enjoy my grandkids, I want to enjoy the labour of love I have put in raising my kids -- not really financially, but the joy, contententment and the respect. I want to feel all of those when I am already old and grey. I can't have that if what I sow in them is hatred or anger to my in-laws. My kids will see, my kids will feel, my kids might think that it's the right thing. I believe in karma. Baka pagnagsungit or binastos ko ang in-laws ko, balang araw baka makatagpo ako ng manugang na gawin din sa akin yun.

Like in so many other times, I am thankful for the opportunity to realise all of these things. I am thankful for the opportunity to learn from this part of my journey. I am thankful for the opportunity I had to be closer to my in-laws.

 I miss them already!

Yes, I have learned to love my in-laws :-)

The Last Week Off

Like what I mentioned in my previous blog, things have been really busy at work. Last week, I didn't plan to work the whole week but ended up teaching the same class from Monday to Friday. Not that I'm complaining but having no helpers around made things at home a little crazier and messier at that!

The weekend passed through really quickly. Didn't get the chance to catch up with house work since our weekend social calendar was also jam packed. With the arrival of my in-laws, the kids' swimming classes, visit to hubby's relatives and of course, our service.

I told Alvin I'm taking the whole week off since starting next week I don't know how  my life is going to be.

I needed this week off to catch up on housework.

I needed this week off to do errands for the family and friends.

I needed this week off to prepare the house and my in-laws for the next 7 weeks.

I needed this week to prepare myself in all aspects for the Herculean task I will be having at work starting Monday.

I needed this week off to spend time with my children.

The last reason takes the chunk of all the reasons why I said no to casual work/calls I received this week.

It was one of the best decisions I made because I can see that my kids were also happy with my decision.

Liam was probably happier because I had the chance to spend an entire morning during their Open Day at school. The priceless smile and hugs he gave me was more than enough to tell me he appreciates me for being there. He just doesn't know it but I was happier and prouder especially after seeing all the schoolwork he has been doing at school and after hearing all the good words his teacher has for him :-)

Obviously I was able to finish all my backlog because I was finally able to sit and write again, thanks to the help of my in-laws.... I plan to spend the next two days (weekends are fully booked again) just relaxing and reading my two books.

The Search is Over: Take 3!

Another major project ticked off the list for 2013 :)

Finding that 7-seater car for our family was not as easy as we thought :)

Here is the story of our adventure.

Early this year, we knew we will be having visitors coming over so we knew we needed to change one of our cars to a bigger car, to accommodate our guests everytime we need to tour them around. Yes, we will all fit into two cars, but I was too lazy to bring and drive the other car hehe

We initially thought of buying a second-hand car. Toyota Avensis was the number one choice only because it's not too big and we have had a good experience with it being the first car of my brother here. But when hubby started looking around, he chanced upon this news article saying Kia will be releasing a new people-mover car (not a SUV) that was quite similar to Avensis. It's the Kia Rondo (Kia Carens in UK and in the Philippines). Based on the pricing when it was released in other countries, hubby was telling me to wait for it to be released in Australia just as so we can see if it will be worth our hard-earned money. Sabi niya nga kasi, if there will just be a small difference in the price of the second hand Avensis (Toyota) and that of the new Kia Rondo, e why not go for the brand new na, right?

Initial reports said it will come out April. But April flew by quickly, wala. While waiting, family were kind of convincing us to look for another brand, as they are afraid of the reliability of the Kia Brand. We seriously considered it, thus, we thought of having a Nissan Dualis + 2. Alvin again researched, BIG TIME, about the Dualis + 2, name it, reviews, manual, etc. But I think I mentioned in my previous blog that when we checked the car the sales agent immediately told us that the third row seats were not designed for adults. It was very specific, kids ages 7-14 years old or anyone not heavier than 45kg. If you use the car beyond those specifications and you get into an accident, you can my sued. So, no.

So we were back to Kia Rondo. By this time, it has been released in the UK and based on the reviews, Alvin was getting more excited to get it. But when May came and there were no clear signs as to when it will be released here in Sydney, we started shopping again.

This time, we shifted our focus on the Mitsubishi Outlander. Alvin saw a great deal, an unused 2013 Demo Car from the dealer, 8k cheaper from the RRP of $40k (base model). Hubby again did his homework, he researched, downloaded and read a lot of stuff. Two Saturdays ago he passed by a Mitsubishi dealer and already enquired. But by this time Kia Rondo has been launched already. The problem was there were no available demo units yet so we can't actually see and check the car. Hubby was also surprised with the pricing. The base model alone costs $30k! Between Kia and Mitsubishi, di ba sa Mitsubishi ka na?

So we pursued the Outlander. We went there Saturday, there was an actual unit available, Alvin tried to sit on the third row, straight away. Kwenk. His knees folded was almost to the level of his chest. Not really a very comfy position esp when you do long drives, right?

Hay. We saw a Holden Captiva, ok, even if hubby is not okay with it, we checked it na rin: same and it was even narrower on the third row. Toyota Kluger: same :( My impression of these cars/SUVs e pinilit na mag seven seater :( So ano na? Alvin was trying to recall kung gaoon ba  kami kasikip when we rode my Kuya's Avensis. Luckily, there was a Toyota nearby that had a used Avensis which was also for sale, for us to check it. Kasi kung masikip din e di we'll go for the Outlander na, right?

Hmmm, the third row of the Avensis had full adult seats. Very comfortable even on long drives. But, hubby is not yet ready to raise the white flag. He called Kia to check if may demo unit na, ayun, meron na! So from Blacktown we drove to Penrith...excited si hubby...the car was sooo pogi! Kaya pala mahal, but wait let's see the third row first --- fail!!!! :(

So ano na?

The dealer of the Outlander was very kind, he was suggesting if we are seating adults on the third row either we get the bigger car like Tarago or the more expensive ones na. E, mg mini-coach na lang kaya kami? Pwede ko pa ipang-service! Hahaha

Kidding aside, the family had a discussion. Yes, everyone had a say while having our afternoon tea at Maccas and checking all the cars. We went back to the reasons why we want a bigger car. We cannot compromise the budget. Over than $32k is no na for us, especially for me.

So to make the long story short, we went back to Avensis, kahit for hubby, namamahalan siya sa re-sale prices of the second hand Avensis that he sees online. Back to square one. Hanap ulit and we saw one 2009 Silver Avensis for sale in a Toyota dealer. Low kms for $22k. The dealer was 40 minutes away  from our place. Saturday night, hubby was saying next week na daw namin balikan. Hihintayin pa rin muna daw niya quote ng Kia. (Ako in my mind: Wait? Pakiulit?! Kia ulit? And I thought we already decided to go back to Avensis?!) I just kept quiet.

Sunday morning, I told hubby for us to check the car na. Kala ko magagalit kasi baka isipin nagaapura na naman ako bumili. But I explained to him to check the car, if he doesn't like it, then we'll not get it. If he does, then he can give a DP na and work on the finances over the week so by next week we can already get the car. One week of delay can spell a big difference, right? Lalo no bank na on Saturdays. Since he had that option not to get the car if he doesn't like it, he agreed. Before leaving for church, he already checked the car's history. One owner, logbook, clean record. No write -off etc. So on that area, check!

We plan to go after our 9am mass. Before going to church, I silently prayed, "Lord, let us know naman what to get. Kung ano na ba gagawin namin."  I don't know how I'll get the answer but I know I'll understand it when it comes. Like the colour of my rosary when we got our first car, Maggie. Magkakulay sila ni Maggie. On our way to church on our last turn, the first car that I saw was a white Toyota Avensis. Okay. Clear as the sky! But I didn't tell Alvin about it.

After the mass, hubby wanted to call the dealer first to check if the car is there. Para nga naman di sayang ang biyahe. After confirming that it was still available, it was then that I told Alvin about the white Avensis I saw. Siya rin pala he saw it but like me he didn't tell it to me. I guess it was what we needed to see. (Only to find out nung pauwi na kami after buying the car, we saw two DIFFERENT white Avensis. He said he didn't see the one coming from the church, what he saw daw was the one parked near our complex!) O di ba?

So yesterday, we went there. Check check...Usap usap.... tanong tanong, test drive, but we had the go signal from Bro, right? so there! Search finally over.

On our way home we were still discussing about this whole adventure. I told hubby na ako, I wanted a brand new one, pogi and ganda points sana di ba? But we were directed on a different path. May basbas naman Niya...we might not know the reason yet why He wanted us to get the second-hand Avensis, but in due time I know we will :) Baka daw sa bahay na lang na bibilhin gamitin ang pera kesa sa kotse hehehe :)

Like what I told my friend, I'm also happy because the car is not too big for me to drive (not too intimidating as compared if we pushed thru with the Outlander or another SUV) and we didn't have to spend too much. If we opted to maximize our budget baka our travelling projects will be put on hold hehehe, kaya, yehey! :)

Overall I found this experience very enriching...nakakainis na paminsan minsan especially if paikot ikot ang dating ng discussions, but I found it enriching as it allowed us to practice decision making skills for one big project or undertaking as a family :) Lahat kami magkakasama sa bawat dealer na pinuntahan at kinausap. Lahat kami may say, especially Kuya :)

We'll be welcoming Ben (or Ven?) next week :)

Sorry, haba pero thanks for reading hehe

This is how he will look like, minus the bars on top :)

My Ninang Ta

Dear Ninang Ta,

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this letter. Thinking about it, I think this has been long overdue.

I actually don't know where to start.

Thank you.

Thank you for all those times you helped Papa and Mama during the times that we didn't have any. I remember those days when Mama will tell us that she had to go to you to "sell" her jewelry so we can have money to spend. I remember as well how you "saved" me from paying for the costume I needed for my sixth grade Christmas concert and my graduation dress. How you sponsored my first JS prom gown -- thank you.

Thank you for making me one of your favourites. You might deny it or other people may question it, but I knew in my heart, that for a time, I was your favourite. You gave me the label "Miss Santos" among us cousins. I felt proud having that title. Thank you for being "soft" to me and for not being strict unlike how you disciplined my other cousins. I felt special, Ninang Ta.

Thank you too for those trips that we had to Quiapo church. I looked forward to Fridays because of those trips. Thank you for spoiling me in your own little way, buying beuatiful dresses in Central Market, nice pair shoes in SM Ermita or Isettan Recto. And how we will eat at 3M pizza after the 12noon mass at Quiapo or how we will eat Halo-halo after our shopping at Central Market.

Thank you for the "secret allowances" that you gave me especially after I receive an award. Thank you for those I was able to buy some fancy toys or school stuff at Tropical. Thank you for being both my Tita and my Ninang. I think I never had the chance to say thank you for really being like a second mother to me while I was growing up.

I can still remember how you tutored me after I got home from school. For teaching me how to draw a balloon and a cat. Thank you for always opening your doors for me and my family.

Sorry.

After we transferred houses our time together lessened. So was our Friday dates. You had a new favourite but I never really took it against you. But, sorry if I didn't make an extra effort to visit you especially when we were living away from one another.

Sorry if I forgot to say "Thank you" for every help that you did. For all the love and care you showed not only to me but for my family.

Sorry for not saying "sorry" during the times we might have hurt you. Or during the times you felt lonely and we failed to make you feel special.

Sorry if I didn't give you enough hugs or cuddles especially when you most needed it.

Sorry if after Lola Sabel died and you were left to your own, I failed to make you feel that even if you dont have a husband or children, that you have me, you have us, to take care of you.

Sorry if the only thing I could offer you during the early stages of your sickness was to sleep beside me on my bed and engage in simple conversations. Yes, I could have done more.

Sorry if I wasn't physically present to take care of you after I got married and  when your Alzheimer's took to a worst turn.

Sorry if the peaceful exit I know you would have wished for didn't happen.

Ninang Ta, I think I forgot to tell you that I love you. I'm sorry.

I pray.

I pray that now that He has ended your suffering, may you enjoy your new home. A home where there is no hatred. No fears. No anxieties. No pain.  No sickness like Alzheimer's.

I pray that your death will bring out something good especially for our family. I am still hoping that your death will be an instrument of peace and healing in our family. Miracles still happen.

I pray that you are now at peace.

I pray that you are now safely in the arms of Lolo Arturo and Lola Sabel.

Please pray for us, Ninang Ta.

I love you and I will miss you.

Love,

Your Jeana Pot

I Did It!

I did it!

Surprisingly, I did.

I thought I wasn't ready for it, I thought we weren't ready for it.

Guess I was wrong.

It was another first for both me (Alvin , too!) and my son, Liam.

As mentioned in my previous post, I decided not to join the rest of my family in the Melbourne, but my son still did. Even if we tried to persuade him up until Wednesday of last week, well, there was really no changing his mind.

Alvin asked me to talk to him Wednesday evening, but at that time, and seeing how eager and excited Liam was for the trip, I felt, we should give it a go. I will miss him, definitely, but I felt it was unfair for him not to go for that reason alone, and because his younger sister didn't want him to join. I just don't want him harboring bad feelings toward his sister, for you know, being a KJ. And it was a chance for him to, hopefully, miss us! hahaha

By Thursday lunch, I was making all the habilins na -- you pray before you sleep, put your dirty clothes in the plastic bags I put inside your luggage, wear your dog tag (withh is address on it), always hold the hand of an adult, drink your vitamins, be a good boy, suncreen and sunnies, hala, the habilins just came! I wonder if he remembered all of it!

I was okay with it. But Thursday night, and probably Liam already realized that it will be the longest time he will be away from us, started crying. Not the crying na atungal, he was just lying down and then he started to sniff and tried to remove the tears from his eyes, without making a big fuss.

That did it for me :( Umiyak din ako :(

The "crying part" didn't even last for 10 minutes hehe. We were both okay. He just asked me to sleep beside him that night and hold his hand.

They left early Friday morning. Sam as soon as she woke up, looked for Liam. I thought she would cry when I told her they already left for Melbourne, but to my relief, she was okay with it. She just kept on telling me every time we go out that we already pick up her brother.

Now, back to my story, my sister-in-law gave me updates every 3 hours hahaha even if I didn't ask for it. Anyway, I called to check up on him and the second time I called, my son already told me, "Just be cool Mum."

Hala! hahaha

So from that time on, I stopped myself from texting and even calling him.

My only relief was seeing his pictures in FB. My Kuya Jay knows me too well because as soon as they started to go places, he took Liam's picture and tagged me straight away in my FB account. That is not my Kuya Jay, but probably he loves me hehehe that's why he did it :)

The four days came quickly and I was an excited mum by Tuesday because they were to arrive around 6pm at our home.

When they arrived I asked my Mum and my siblings how Liam was, and they said they didn't have any problems.

Although during their second night, my sister told me that probably he had a bad dream, because he awoke in the middle of the night and asked her if he can go home already. My sister had to explain to him that it was not possible. Anyway, he didn't cry or anything, he just asked my sister to sleep beside him and hold his hand. End of story.

I was surprised because I didn't become super affected or super sad with him not being around. You know, the feeling as if your world has stopped revolving. Bumaha ng luha or the like. Maybe because I was able to prepare myself mentally and emotionally, and maybe because I still had Sammie. It will be unfair for her if I just sulk, right? I was missing him but I wasn't sad.

And at the end of the day, seeing and hearing him tell us that he really enjoyed and had fun, was more than enough :)

This experience proved that I can really be a tough Mum and that my son  has proven that he can be independent. More than being lonely, I was actually happy and proud of what we have both realized and achieved thru this experience.

As my friend described this experience, "maaga bumitiw sa palda ng nanay...ihanda mo na ang puso mo!"

Yes, that is what I am definitely doing, because I know that this is just the start, the beginning of many adventures, experiences and choices my son will be making, without me--without us.

So help him God :D

Here are some of the pictures he had during his Melbourne trip:

Happy to be Complete

Writer's Note: I actually wrote this 17 December but because there were a lot of plans and we went on a lot of trips, I ended up saving it as a draft and totally forgetting all about it hehe :)

I can't believe it...God is indeed great!

After seven years, my parents, and all five of us, their kids, are again complete...thanking God for allowing it to be physically and financially possible for us to be together again!

A bonus is, we're all here together Down Under!

Ang sarap ng pakiramdam lalo't naalala ko lahat ng pinagdaanan namin dati... Lahat ng hirap, pangmamaliit ng ibang tao, at kung ano-ano pa.

More than our love, our faith and service pulled us through all the hardships we faced.

Thank you Lord!

Post Script: This is a dream come true for us. An answered prayer. A very big blessing. Never in our wildest dreams have we imagined we will be able to do something like this. We are thankful that we got to spend time as a family, that we were able to be complete not on a sad occasion (like death, touchwood), but on happy occasions!

This indeed is one of the best and happiest Christmases we had. Nakakapagod at medyo magastos, pero the joy we felt outweighs all of it. We don't know when we will have the chance to be complete again. So we're really thankful for this.

My two youngest siblings will be flying back to Manila soon. I already miss them :( I know that their nephews and nieces will also miss them. Iba rin talaga nagagawa ng talagang nakikita at nakakasama nila ang Tito Bok and Tita Pau nila. Kilalang kilala na sila ng mga bagets ngayon!

Passing Up on Melbourne

Passing up a chance to travel again is, sigh, a big thing for me.

The whole family is going to Melborune, doing the long ten-hour drive from Sydney...all except us :(

Alvin can't take a leave from work anymore.

Next option was just the three of us, me, Liam and Sammie. All was doing okay. I've paid my share for the house we're renting and bought tickets for Liam and myself for the Australian Open. But I changed my mind the last minute.

Our short drives last week (1 to 3 hour drive) made me realize that driving for ten hours, with the two kids, especially Sam, without their Papa, is going to be ONE GREAT challenge for me.

My Kuya suggested that Liam still goes with them, anyway, he already has the ticket. Liam is all for it and is really looking forward to it. I know it's a good exposure for him, since he is taking tennis lessons.

Sigh. Passing the chance to explore  Melbourne, other parts of Victoria - the 12 Disciples, and watching the Australian Open? More sigh.

Anyway, hopefully, we'll get the chance to travel again, as a family, soon.

I'll write my experience of Liam being away for four days on a different blog entry.

Sisterly Love

Ways that my little Sammie shows her love to her Kits Bits:

Breakfast: she doesn't eat until Liam wakes up and joins us at the dining table.

If we are eating leftovers for breakfast, say, like pancakes, she won't let us touch the last piece, even if we ask her to, telling "Don't touch it Papa, Mama, that is for Kuya Liam."

When we go to the shops and Liam is not with us, she is quiet and keeps on asking: "Mama, where is Liam?"

If we go out and Liam doesn't follow to the car, she looks for her Kuya straight away.

When we go to the library without Liam, she borrows something, like a Jimmy Neutron DVD, for her Kuya, which she knows he likes.

And just recently, she doesn't want her Kuya Liam to go Melborune with the rest of the family to have another road trip and watch the Australian Open, for the simple reason that she will miss him.

There. I know these are just small things for you. But she does these without us telling her. It touches and melts our heart because we know that these are simple acts that proves her love for her Kits Bits.

Our Parents 41st Wedding Anniversary

We surprised our Papa and Mama with a simple wedding ceremony and renewal of vows for their 41st wedding anniversary.

We took advantage of the rare opportunity of us being complete during their wedding anniversary.

We wanted to celebrate their Ruby Wedding anniversary last year, but it wasn't possible.

It was still a very simple ceremony attended only by us, the immediate family. It was all us, from the readers, choir, florist, and altar server. It wasn't extravagant like what we would normally see in couples renewing their vows. No big number of guests, no gowns, very simple.

We honoured both of them before the mass started, by giving our thanks and appreciation for all their love and sacrifices and for bringing Christ to our families.

It made the whole thing more special and more intimate.

I know it was dream come true for my Mama who finally got to walk down the aisle.

They were married in a very simple ceremony by their classmate priest from UST. No one from their families knew of the wedding. No wedding gowns, no reception.

We had a simple picnic in a nearby park for their "reception."  where they had their cake-cutting ceremony and wine toasting.

More than anything else, we are thankful that they are still with us, to witness our weddings and enjoy their grandchildren.

41 years! Wow, it's one tough act to follow!

their new wedding rings, blessed by Fr. Phrabu

the happy couple
happy Mama, indeed!
my family
has now expanded...getting bigger!

Again, our family is not perfect. Although we have surpassed a lot of challenges in our journey, majority of which concerned finances, we still face struggles and have disagreements every now and then. But at the end of the day, we choose to remain, a family.

Time to Give Thanks

If you have been following my blog, you know that I don't wait for the year to end before I write my year-end review. This blog entry is actually late as compared to the ones I wrote the previous years. In less than two months, the year 2012 will be over and I feel it's now time for me to look back and see how my 2012 went. It is now time to give thanks.

2012 has been a great year. There were so many things I didn't expect to happen, but did happen. Most of which are things to be thankful for, many good things.

I went back to work this year. Although at first I had plenty of non-working days and I was already starting to get bored, thinking that this year will be similar to the previous years, I was proven wrong. God has provided me with a lot of opportunities to work this year. I had my first teaching block this year. From mid of Term 1 up until Term 4, I was very busy. All my fears laid to rest.

In addition, this year, I was able to overcome my struggles and insecurites when it came to dealing with my workmates. God sent His affirmation through the students under my care. All is well now.

This year, hubby and I became more active with our service. We were asked to facilitate in a Christian Life Program for married couples, and eventually became household head. It was a new chapter in our spiritual journey and we continue to experience His works through our other brothers and sisters he has entrusted us.

This year, Sam started to attend childcare. As expected, the first few weeks were difficult, not only for her but also for me. I had to be tough even if at times I was flooded with guilt for having to leave her in the childcare. Now, there are good days and some bad days, but overall, we able to manage and meet the challanges that go with our decision to leave her (and Liam) at Yogies when I go to work.

This year was financially good for our family. Hubby's contract was extended. He got another raise.  He was considered to take on a position in another country. I got plenty of work. We were able to help other people. We were able to send assistance to our families in Manila. We were able to enjoy extras, plenty of extras.

This year, we were able to purchase our second car, Mickie, my first car. She has been a great help for me since things got busy at work.

This year, we were able to travel as a family (travel -- fly) again. We were able to celebrate Easter at Gold Coast,  will travel to Singapore, and go home for a very short stay in Manila to attend my SIL's wedding. God truly provides. It's one of my many wishes which has been granted. More travel wishes on my list though hehehe.

This year, was a good year for us, health-wise. Touchwood, but no serious illness, sickness visited us and the kids this year.  Just minor discomforts and the usual colds and cough. No accidents whatsoever. Thanking God for always sending His guardian angels to protect us and the kids in our everyday travels and endeavors.

This year my family, after almost 8 years, will finally be complete to celebrate Christmas and New Year. My parents and siblings got their Tourist Visa and will be flying Down Under next month :)

This year has been a better year for me and hubby. Our marriage is better than ever. I remember writing about giving up late last year because of the many fights we had. We were able to address those issues. There are still "humps" every now and then, but they are all manageable. I give credit to hubby, who, not once did not even entertain to quit during the most difficult times.

This year, our family valued family time more. Even when tired and sometimes expensive, we managed to make our weekends more special by going out or by just making something extraordinary from the ordinary activities that we do.

This year, I saw how Sam and Liam have managed to achieve a lot of develomental milestones. Liam is all set to go to the big school. They have similarities but they have a lot of differences too. But at the end of the day, their closeness as siblings becomes better and better.

This year, I was able to read good books. Books that reminded me about my priorities. I plan to continue with this next year. This year, I allotted more time to reading, may it be a book, an e-book, magazine or newspaper. Feels good to feed your brain with information.

This year, I saw myself letting go some more of my oc-ness. The past few days, I was actually telling myself that I can't believe I'm not losing it even if our home was just a mess! I was able to reach that state where I was not in a hurry to clean up, I reached the state where I was loving the mess of our home! Believe me, it's an achievement for me.

The year 2012 has been a great year. There are a gazillion things I didn't write anymore, but overall I am very happy as to how 2012 came to be. I am thankful not only for these good things but also for the trials that we faced (and overcame) and were blessings in disguise.

I can only pray and hope that the year 2013 will be as good, if not, even better.

Thank you God for 2012. Looking forward to your great plans for us this 2013 :)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

A Time for Everything

I told you I will have the time for all the things that I plan to do, one of which is to write another blog entry ;)

This week has been quite busy since I worked for four days. I had to let go of some things in favour of the more important ones. I had my first two-week teaching block and I can say that it was an affirmation that indeed, I am cut for teaching.

Monday was a bit chaotic but I got to get back on track as soon as I figured out and settled the things that needed to be settled. It was a chance for me to see that I haven't lost my magic inside the classroom ;) One week down, one more to go.

****

Sammie has been a bit clingy to me the past two days. I have been leaving her for two extra days at Yogies. I know that it was a change from our usual routine of swimming lessons every Mondays  and Gymbaroo lessons every Tuesdays. I thank her for her understanding. She has grown over the past weeks and has achieved a lot of developmental milestones. Her vocabulary continues to improve, she can now answer us in complete sentences and even give remarks like "hurry up mama."  Her present addiction is watching Hi5 and Despicable Me.

*****

Liam started with his Kindy transition classes today, Friday. He was had some apprehensions at the beginning, asking me a lot of questions, but he was okay with me leaving him at the room with the other kids. When I came back to pick him up, the first thing that he told me:"Mama, I like this!" Happy that he seems to enjoy going to school. Speaking of which, his reading has greatly improved over the weeks. His Math skills as well has improved a lot. He can now add single digit numbers without regrouping. He started with his tennis lessons again and his coach has started teaching him to do service. He needs to work double time on his service hehehe.

****

Funny how you can overlook the mess at home and choose the mess you will fix if you are really busy with more pressing things like, work and catching up with the kids.
.

*****

Weeee! I called my mom this afternoon and she told me that the results of their visa application will be delivered today. Need I say more? I'm so happy and excited because our family will be complete after almost 8 years!,,, happy, very happy Christmas!

*****

Sammie's party is all ready to go! Thankful that I finished most of the preps over the school holidays. Food has been ordered and plan has been given to the venue coordinator ;) now we wait :)

 ****

All is set too with our holidays. I haven't started packing clothes but with the IT and tickets, all have already been purchased. I'd allot more time with this after Sammie's party ;)

There are still so many things to write about but I have to save it for now because it might take me forever to finish!

****

Happy weekend everyone!

Catching Up!

It's the school holidays and the kids are in Yogies so I get to finally catch up on my blogging!

Pardon me because it might be a long post. I just decided to put everything here than make or write separate blog entries for each of the stories I want to share :)

We are already on the last quarter of the year and yes, it is becoming busier by the day!

While on school holidays and I have my niece and nephew to help me out in taking care of Sam, I decided to start preparing for her birthday party. I know it's still a month away, but since I'm already booked by the first three weeks of Term 4, I decided now is the best time to do it. As I have mentioned it before, I don't work well with pressure hehehe :)

Here are the things that are keeping me busy the past few days:

I made the lolly bags, prepared the birthday banner, bought the balloon pack, bought the lollies, made my own pinata (I find the ready made too expensive!), did and put the thank you tags for the party favours and bought the plates, cuttlery etc. needed for the party. I'm still thinking if I will be making  personalized name tags for the kids...haven't decided at this point, although I already bought the materials :)

sorry upside down! lollies for the big kids' lolly bags
(the little ones will have a separate one c/o the venue)

I have already updated the guest list as some of our guests have sent their "regrets" of not being able to join us. I still need to place the food orders, I'm giving myself until a week before because I have given our guests until 14 October to confirm their attendance. That way, I won't be ordering too much food.

I still need to ask and think of people who can help me out with the face paint, putting on tattoo, giving of prizes, and of course documentation. I can already ask my two nieces to give the party favours for the kids after the party. This is the hardest part of having a party, the small details -- they are driving me nuts hehehe. I am stopping myself because I originally planned to have a VERY SIMPLE one, so I'm not going to stress myself with this (fingers crossed!).

That is the big event for next month. Although prior to that, most of our weekends have been booked with other kids' parties, not to mention that we will have the annual family day of BAT by the 13th of October, again at Luna Park.

Another thing that is keeping me busy is our next travel as a family!

Yes, I can now spill the beans as we decided not to surprise hubby's family anymore!

all ready to fly again as a family! weeee!
My sister-in-law is tying the knot soon and we decided that we will all go home to be there with her on her special day. Weddings are very special occasions where we think, the whole family, as much as possible, should be complete. On our original plan, it is only Alvin who is to go home. We wanted to bring Liam with him, but I'm not 100% at peace with the idea. Besides, Liam had important events here, Moving Up Day (Pre-school grduation) and Kindy transition and of course, we had to think of the expenses. We had to be practical as well, right?

Anyway, to make the long story short, God in His goodness put everything in place, Liam's graduation and Kindy transition will be happening before our the wedding so no conflicts whatsoever, including providing for the funds that we will be needing for the tripS. Yes, we will be stopping over Singapore first before heading to Manila. We will be staying there for four days :) Another bonding activity for the family and another opprtunity to expose our children to another culture. Lucky (very lucky) kids! (Kami ng tatay nila malaki na ng makasakay ng eroplano!)

God has been providing and we can't thank Him enough for allowing us to live comfortably and enjoy plenty of extras (more on this later). We haven't left for our trip but we already incurred expenses like passport renewals (for me and Liam) and flights (SQ flights are not that cheap and we didn't get the ones on sale because we had to consider the chances of possibly rebooking the flights just in case, touchwood, something happens). I'm excited to fly SQ this time because even if you pay more than the other airlines, your travel will really be very comfortable and relaxing. Additonal expenses are of course the hotel bookings (hotel booking has been confirmed, just waiting for the costings from our travel agent), the pocket money we will be spending both in Singapore and in Manila, the entrance fees that we will be paying for the sites we will be visiting in Singapore. Not to mention the wedding gift we will be giving to the newly weds and the early Christmas presents we will be giving to hubby's other siblings.

The funny thing though is we will only be staying in Manila for 7 days. That already includes our  flights to and from Sydney! hehehe Most of our friends are saying, sayang naman ang ginastos sa pamasahe, but we can't stay long since Alvin cannot take a long leave from work and my parents and two younger siblings are scheduled to fly down under to celebrate the holidays with us. This is the first time, in years that my family will be complete, so extending our stay in Manila is non-negotiable.

Anyway, ganoon talaga, ipipikit mo na lang ang mga mata sa gastos para mapasaya ang mga mahal mo. I was actually very excited to see the faces of my in-laws when they see us arrive at the airport if we decided to keep it as a secret to the very end. Natakot lang ako, baka wala kami tulugan when we keep it as a secret hahaha. We just told them about the good news last week and boy, the smile on my MIL and FIL's faces? Priceless :) Joy radiated on their faces. I know they are very happy and excited to see and spend time with their grandkids again after almost a year :)

(My SIL and my parents knew we were all coming home, they had to because we will be part of the entourage. Trying to keep this one a low profile because we don't think we can meet up with friends as much as we would like to. Alvin's relatives from the US are also flying to Manila so I'm already expecting a lot of time catching up with them).

God is good. If this blog can be an instrument to sort of evangelize other people, then so be it. Last Sunday hubby and I were talking of how we felt so "maluwag" ...since I started working. Hubby's salary is more than enough to meet our daily needs and our "luho" every now and then. But me working again made us feel the difference. Some people learning that we will be going to Singapore and Manila are saying that we should grab the opportunity to shop because it's much cheaper there. It made me think, I don't have to go to another country just to shop because, God in His goodness, has allowed me and my family to buy the things we want (and need) here in Sydney. This includes maintaining our two other savings account, the kids' savings account and swiping everything on the credit card bills every month.

I remember our humble beginnings here in Sydney -- hubby doing manual labor, me helping re-pack hairnets  he brings home from work and be paid 10cents  for each pack, and comparing what we are now, I can't help but get teary-eyed. I get teary-eyed because my heart is just overflowing with gladness and thanksgiving, BIG TIME. And so when I see someone who looks like a new migrant (folders, papers on bag, holding a map)...I can't help but remember that three years ago, hubby might have looked like that person...I say a silent prayer for that person, that he will also be blessed in the same way we have been blessed. When I started working as a teacher again, I was extremely surprised with all the calls that I got this year! I mean, the past years, there were days when I didn't get any calls! This year, the calls just kept coming, not that I'm complaining, but I was and am amazed! I was also given my very first 2-week teaching block starting next term. This opportunity made me decide not to push thru with my enrollment. God has been giving me the signals, I'm just too stubborn, ignoring them, still doubting. But when this offer came? It's like one BIG SIGN from God,  flashing in front of me saying: I WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU! BELIEVE! HAVE FAITH! Not keeping all the blessings to ourselves, we try in our own small way to help others in need.

Hubby didn't get the job he applied for (the one which was 15minutes from our place) but we are okay. We after all prayed for humility to accept whatever He wills for us and for Alvin, during the time that we were also praying for him to get the job. So if He says no, then, we know that something better is in store for us :) Keeping the faith.

I'm already a self-confessed Facebook addict, but there are days when I feel it's starting to get boring. Recently, I have discovered new apps which takes my time away from Facebook. It's Instragram, Goodreads and Pinterest.

I am loving Goodreads because I get to have ideas from fellow friends who are book lovers, what books I can read. I have made it my own book club. I get to have ideas about good books and I get to share my ideas of good books that I have read. It reignited my love for reading :) I just finished reading The Time Keeper of Mitch Albom and now I am currently reading Days Like These. The book I am currently reading is a memoir of a cancer patient. Gave me a chance to see what they have to go through just to get Cancer free. I feel it is a good book to read after the Time Keeper. There were "lessons" in Albom's book that were proven in the life of author of Days Like These.

The other one which is keeping me busy is Pinterest. I get to see plenty of nice, cute, brilliant photos! Not only that, it also gives me plenty of ideas about anything under the sun -- weddings, photos, parties, fashion, schooling, home decorating, home keeping and a lot more! Try it :)

Weee! Natapos din. I hope you had fun reading my stories. I hope to be able to update you, time permitting, but if not, you know very well the reasons ;D

"The Gift of Grandparents"

Yesterday at work, the school had an assembly to celebrate Grandparents' Day. The Year 1 students led the assembly as they prepared songs, prayers, and a simple yet touching program for their grandparents.

One part of the program included the kids reading their simple essays: descriptions of their grandparents, why they love their grandparents, what they do with their grandparents. I cannot help but remember my two Lolas, Lola Sabel and Mamay. (My siblings and I were not fortunate enough to meet our two Lolos since they both passed away at an early age).

I can very much relate to the kids who said: "I love my Nanna because she likes reading stories to me...she buys me things/toys...she plays with me...she cooks for me..." As some of them were reading their outputs you can see the smile on their grandparents' faces. Some of them were even teary-eyed.

As I was growing up, I remember praying fervently that God give my parents long life so they can see me settle down. I think that prayer has been granted. After I got married, my prayer changed. I prayed that God will allow my parents to see the birth and enjoy their grandkids. Again, I think, that prayer has been answered.

I consider my kids lucky because they had the chance to meet and enjoy the company of  both their Lolos and Lolas. My kids know their Lolos and Lolas even if we are miles apart from one another. Thanks to technology, we try to bridge the gap and physical absence through Skype, phone calls, and thru Facebook. It's like they are having a long-distance love-affair with them. Of course, they also get to catch-up with one another when they come here for a short vacation or vice-versa.

I remember watching one current affair show which featured the importance of the presence of grandparents to their grandkids. Truly, there are some lessons in life that only grandparents can teach their grandkids. Their wisdom is really different from that of us, the parents. The way they spoil their grandkids is different from how we do it, in the same way that the effects on the grandkids are different.

The Grandparents' Day celebration made me wish that there could be more opportunities for my kids (and their cousins ) to spend more time with their Lolos and Lolas, TOGETHER. Not only thru Skype, not only by talking to them on the phone, or thru uploaded pictures and videos. To really spend time together, playing with one another, telling stories, shopping for them (hehehe Lola Lynn!), teaching them lessons about life.

The distance between us probably made me appreciate them more. It would have been probably different if we are still based in Manila, and they are just a stone's throw away from us.

The assembly ended with a short message from the Assistant Principal. She mentioned about the part in Christiam marriage rites where it says: "may you live long enough to see your children's children," -- this for me is indeed a beautiful blessing. This for me, makes grandparents a "gift." And I couldn't agree more when she tried to define what "grandparent" is by taking the meaning of "grand" first from the dictionary-- dignified, noble, admirable, sublime, magnificent, wonderful, worthy of respect. Truly, these words define what grandparents are.

The Gift of Grandparents. A very good read.
I thank the Lord for granting my prayers -- for allowing my parents ( and Alvin's too) to see their children's children.

I hope that in the future, Alvin and I will also be "rewarded" for being a parent.
